BFR Professional Service Team

David H. Belding

For over 35 years, David has provided his clients a combination of financial, tax, and investment advisory service. After completing his graduate business school studies in 1973 at the University of Texas in Austin, he moved to Houston and began a 20 year career as a practicing CPA; the last eight years (1985-1993) were in the capacity of tax partner with Ernst & Young and its predecessor firm, E&W.

Prior to entering the investment advisory business in July 1993, David devoted much of his career to advising families and entrepreneurs concerning a wide range strategic wealth and estate planning opportunities. Over the past 15 plus years, David has continued to devise customized investment strategies for his clients addressing their unique financial objectives. He founded BFR, an independent fee-based registered investment advisory firm, in April 1997. Through David's leadership, the firm has become known as a "high touch" wealth management advisory firm.

Jordan D. Mathews

Jordan is a Houston native with a BS in Mathematics, with emphasis on Statistics, Probability, and Data Analysis, from the University of Texas. He discovered his interest in financial markets during summer internships at SAMCO in Dallas, where he created spreadsheets analyzing financial data and projecting future cash flows for publicly traded companies. As an intern at SAMCO he also developed a quantitative system for ranking bank holding companies.

Jordan was a housing market analyst for Metrostudy in Houston, analyzing local and national housing market supply-and-demand data. Concurrently he was developing his analysis and portfolio-management skills, while managing a portfolio of family assets based on a long/short global-macro equity strategy. He left Metrostudy and joined a Houston-based investment advisor, with the goal of co-founding a China-themed investment partnership. Those plans did not materialize, however, and he returned to developing his investment acumen, specifically with respect to quantitative and technical analysis. He co-founded Arbitrage Capital Partners as Director of Quantitative and Technical Analysis, where he created quantitative models for allocating portfolios based on risk, and for identifying countries and macro themes with prospects for equity appreciation. Despite a strong track record, he and his partners recognized that the climate for hedge fund start-ups was unattractive at that time, and they decided to pursue other interests.

Jordan met Dave Belding in mid-2010 and knew immediately that they shared common views on risk and on key factors influencing capital markets. Jordan joined BFR first on a part-time basis, and recently became a full-time employee. His duties include monitoring current and prospective investments for the BFR Prudent Growth strategy, creating trade files to uniformly allocate trades across BFR-managed accounts, and leveraging technology to implement trades, with a focus on consistency and accuracy.
